Why do young people take drugs & alcohol?

The reasons why young people may take drugs or drink alcohol are numerous and complex.

Reasons may include: curiosity, peer influence, perception of peer engagement in the behaviour,  as a coping strategy and their availability.

One may be present or multiple factors may be influencing a young person to experiment with drugs and alcohol.

It can be useful as a parent to ask youself the following question:

Why do adults drink alcohol?

All of those reasons you just thought of can just as easily apply to young people and their use of drugs and alcohol.

You know more than you think

It can be useful to think about the above question and your answers if you are faced with a child experimenting with/using drugs or alcohol.

You may be surprised about how much you do know about something which at first can seem totally seperate from your own experiences.
